If you encounter issues when trying to install a program on your Windows computer, the logs files can help in troubleshooting the installation issue.

  • After enabling it, Windows Installer logging will track the progress of installation and will add its findings to the Temp folder.
  • The log files can easily be found as they will start with “Msi” and end with the .log extension.
  • To access the Temp folder, open the Run window by pressing the Press the Windows and R keys and write the following %temp%, then press enter.

Press the Windows and R keys together to open the Run window and type regedit in the run command box, then press enter and select yes when prompted by User Account Control for permissions.

Copy and paste the following path in the navigation bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

If you’re unable to find the Installer folder in the path, right click on the Windows folder on the left side and select New > Key.

Now right click on the Installer folder and select New > String Value and name it Logging.

On the right side, double click on the Logging entry to open the Edit String window. In the Edit String window, in the Value Data field write the following: voicewarmupx.

  • Click on OK and close the Registry Editor window.
  • Restart the PC after enabling logging for Windows Installer.
  • Try to install the program again for the log file to be created.

Once the troubleshooting process for the said program installation is complete, you can disable the logging for Windows Installer by deleting the Logging entry in the registry. Otherwise, every time when a program will be installed a log file will be created.
