General troubleshooting steps

1. Restart your PC a few times, then try again.
2. Disconnect all peripherals.
3. When updating through Windows Update, disable your Internet connection, and proceed with the installation when the download reaches 100%.

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

1. Press Windows Key + I to open the Settings app.
2. When Settings app opens, navigate to Update & Security section.
3. From the menu on the left choose Troubleshoot. In the right pane, click Run the troubleshooter.
4. Follow the instructions to complete the troubleshooter.

Reset your Windows Update components

1. Press the Windows Key + X, and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Powershell (Admin).
2. When Command Prompt opens, run the following commands one by one:

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

Sometimes your Windows Update components might not be working properly, and that can lead to error 0x80070017.

Install the updates manually

1. Go to Microsoft’s Update Catalog website.
2. In the search bar, enter the update code. The code should start with KB followed by an array of numbers.
3. Once you find the update, click the Download button to download it. It’s important to download the update that matches your system’s architecture, so double check everything before you download the update.

Run a chkdsk scan

1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
2. Enter the chkdsk /f X: command. Before you run the command, be sure to replace X with the letter that matches your system drive. In almost all cases that would be C.
3. Now you’ll be asked if you want to schedule a chkdsk scan once the PC restarts.
4. Press Y and restart your system.
