Many things could stop you from installing new apps. One such error is “Error writing temporary file, Make sure your temp folder is valid”. In this post, we’ll know more about this error and have a look at some effective ways in which you can fix the error quickly.
It is an NSIS or Nullsoft Scriptable Install System error. It occurs when you try to uninstall an application, run an installer package or even restart your computer. As the error code states, when this issue occurs, Windows cannot read or write inside the temp folder. The error also indicates that the .EXE file of the application has become corrupt due to one or the other reason because of which the Windows Installer file is affected and no changes can be made to the application.

Try Running Installer As Admin
If you are unable to install the application normally as you would, you can try installing it as an administrator. This step will give complete permission to the installer to run the application on your PC. To run the installer as admin, right-click on the installer and select Run as administrator.
Remove Temporary Files Manually
- Open the Run dialog box by pressing Windows + R
- When the run dialog box opens, type %temp% and press Enter
- When the temporary files open, select all and click on Shift + Delete.
Configure Appropriate Permissions
- Open Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows + E keys.
- Navigate to C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local. Change the UserName with yours.
- Right-click on the Temp folder and select Properties.
- Click on the Security tab.
- Select your username and click on the Edit button next to To change permissions, click Edit.
- Click on the Allow checkbox next to Full Control.
- Click on Apply and then, OK
- Restart your computer.
Restart Windows Installer Service
- To open the Run dialogue box, start by pressing Win + R on your keyboard.
- Type services.msc into the text box and press Enter. The Services window will open as a result.
- Double-click on the Windows Installer service to bring up a window with its properties.
- Choose Automatic from the Startup type drop-down option once you’re on the Properties box.
- Click Stop after moving over to the Service status section.
- Finally, click on Apply and then on OK.
- Restart your compter.
Fix Memory-Related Issues
- Click on Start menu, type Windows Memory Diagnostic and press Enter. This will launch the window of Windows Memory Diagnostic.
- A small window will appear asking you to confirm restart of your PC. You can also schedule it on the next bootup of your PC.
If you wish to check for problems with RAM right now then save your work and click on Restart now and check for problems (recommended). - Now the computer will reboot itself and a blue screen of Windows Memory Diagnostics will appear, showing the status. This test might take some time to complete, so you just need to wait until the test completes.
This test can be bit slow and you may find that the test is aborted. But that’s not the case as the test would be running.
Once the scan is finished you will get a detailed report regarding the health of your Ram. In Windows 10 to get the detailed report you must have to go to Event Viewer.
